PSYCHIATRY AND MENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Overview
The Psychiatry and Mental Health Department at Muhimbili National Hospital – Mloganzila specializes in treating psychological, psychiatric, neuropsychiatric, and addiction disorders. It offers a range of rehabilitation services, including various forms of psychotherapy, occupational therapy, and long-term rehabilitation at Vikuruti rehabilitation village. The department has a 54-bed capacity, divided into units for geriatrics, child and adolescent patients, acutely ill patients, and general adult psychiatry. It is staffed by mental health specialists, nurses, social workers, clinical psychologists, and occupational therapists, in collaboration with MNH Upanga and MUHAS. Organized into General Adult Psychiatry, Liaison, Neuropsychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Therapeutic and Rehabilitation Psychiatry, the department provides both inpatient and outpatient services with specific OPD days for each specialty.
The Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at Muhimbili National Hospital – Mloganzila provides care for patient with mental health problems who are suffering from psychological, psychiatry, neuropsychiatry and addiction disorders in a super specialty manner. The department also provides rehabilitation services which includes psychosocial interventions such as psychotherapies (individually, couple, family or group), occupational therapy, resolving social problems as well as providing long term rehabilitation at Vikuruti rehabilitation village which is situated at Chamanzi area (Mbande).
1.1 PSYCHIATRY SERVICE ALLOCATION
1.2 CAPACITY
The department has 54 bed capacity, this includes 8 beds for Geriatrics, 16 beds for Child and adolescents’ patients, 12 beds for acutely ill patients and 18 beds for General Adult Psychiatry. We also provides private/IPPM services.
1.3 STAFF
The Department has clinical staff (Mental health specialist and super specialists, Nurses, Social workers, Clinical Psychologist and occupational therapist.). The department is working together with clinical staff from MNH Upanga as well as academic staff from MUHAS as per memorandum of understanding
1.4 ORGANIZATION
Psychiatry and mental health department is currently organized into:
1. General adult psychiatry
Provides services both inpatient and outpatient services to patients with all mental health problems without special needs. Tuesday and Friday of every week are allocated for OPD services.
2. Liaison, Neuropsychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry
Provides services both inpatient and outpatient services to mentally ill patients with comorbid medical condition, neuropsychiatry disorders and elderly patient with mental and memory problems. Wednesday of every week is allocated for OPD services
3. Child and Adolescent psychiatry
Provides services both inpatient and outpatient services to patients with childhood pervasive developmental disorders. Thursday of every week is allocated for OPD services
4. Addiction Psychiatry
Provides services both inpatient and outpatient services to patients with substance use disorders. Monday of every week is allocated for OPD services
5. Therapeutic and rehabilitation psychiatry (Clinical Psychology, Occupational therapy and Social welfare)
These are daily services for both inpatient and outpatient.
